New Study Shows Benefits of Laser Treatment for Menopause Symptoms
Mr Taylor’s study into the benefits of Fractional CO₂ laser monotherapy for treating Genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) has been published in Maturitas – The International Journal of Midlife Health. GSM is the modern medical term for a chronic, progressive condition caused by low estrogen affecting the vagina, vulva, bladder, and urethra. Also known previously as “vaginal atrophy” and similar terms.
The study looked at how Fractional carbon dioxide laser therapy was associated with symptom improvement after treatment completion. The outcomes were assessed four weeks after the final treatment session. It was found that Fractional carbon dioxide laser therapy was associated with significant symptom improvement. The study also found that concomitant use of topical vaginal oestrogen was not linked to statistically significant additional benefits. However it was noted that a wider study is needed: “Larger randomised sham-controlled trials with longer follow-up are required to determine comparative efficacy and durability of response.”
